Background - The Zeist Foundation is an Atlanta-based family foundation created by Dr. George and Jean Brumley in 1989. Its mission is to “embrace a holistic approach to address the needs of underserved children in the areas of Health & Human Services, Education and Arts & Culture. The Foundation seeks opportunities to partner with reputable organizations that are effective, collaborative and adaptive.”

From its early days as a “place-based funder” in the Edgewood neighborhood, it has evolved into a grantmaking entity that applies the learning from that experience to a holistic approach to serving youth, children and families, The Foundation supports nonprofits that aim to be creative, imaginative and are willing to take healthy risks to find solutions to the issues faced by the children and youth of Georgia. The Foundation is governed by Co-Chairs Marie Brumley Foster and Nancy Brumley Robitaille and Trustee Brad Foster.

Position – The Associate Director will work closely with the Executive Director and other members of the Foundation team to plan and execute the activities that support the mission and vision of the Zeist Foundation.  In addition, the Associate Director will work in the Zeist Family Office and promote teamwork with the Zeist Company staff members who provide financial and administrative support to the Zeist Foundation. A great deal of the Associate Director’s time will be spent in the community representing the Zeist Foundation and this ambassador role is vitally important to honoring the Brumley Family legacy.

Primary Responsibilities

•             Assist the Board of Directors and the Executive Director in articulating and implementing the grant making goals and programs of The Zeist Foundation

•             Recommend initiatives that will advance the foundation’s mission and programs and explore new areas for foundation engagement and innovation

•             Maintain a comprehensive understanding of The Zeist Foundation’s grant making policies and procedures; grant-related regulatory, tax, and legal requirements

•             Prepare written descriptions of prospective grantees for the annual Prospect List and proposal review meetings

•             Provide assistance to grantees and recommend helpful resources

•             Build strong relationships with a broad array of grantees and provide support to grantees throughout the grant development, implementation and evaluation process

•             Review grantee reports and recommend methods to evaluate the impact of foundation grants

•             Assist in development of external communications on The Zeist Foundation’s mission, goals and programs, including updating foundation website

•             Participate in site visits with staff and board members and assist with Junior Board meeting preparations

•             Represent The Zeist Foundation at forums and meetings of funders, such as the Atlanta Foundations Forum, Georgia Grantmakers Alliance and the Southeastern Council of Foundations

•             Meet with members of the nonprofit community about prospective projects and other philanthropic issues that align with the Zeist Foundation’s mission

•             Support activities of Mayson Avenue Cooperative that advance the Foundation’s mission in Edgewood and foster place based philanthropy collaboration

•             Participate in the strategic planning process to develop the long- and short-term goals of The Zeist Foundation and work with the Executive Director to assure that annual goals are consistent with strategy

•             Assist with and implement strategies related to engaging the next generation in the work of the Zeist Foundation and expanding their knowledge of the nonprofit sector and the role of philanthropy


•             Excellent written and verbal communication skills

•             Ability to quickly understand and analyze information, be an active listener, synthesize findings, and make recommendations

•             Strong sense of mission and humility

•             Capable and willing to do work at all levels, including thinking strategically and performing day to day activities

•             Team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and achieve actionable results through others with the ability to build strong and sustainable relationships and wield influence within all levels of the organization

•             Ability to maintain a positive attitude, team spirit and a sense of humor


Education, Training, and Experience:

•             Bachelor’s degree required

•             A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in one or more of the following areas required: philanthropy, nonprofit, education

•             Experience working with children or in the youth development field

•             Leadership development training with adolescents and/or young adults

•             Proficiency with MS Office including PowerPoint and Excel

•             Capable and comfortable dealing with traditional and social media
