Member Highlight: Langley Shealy

The year is only two weeks old, but Langley Shealy has already taken on two new responsibilities -- she recently accepted a new position at the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina and has also agreed to serve as a faculty member at next month's offering of Essential Skills & Strategies for New Grantmakers.

After more than six years as the foundation's director of communications and public information, Shealy has now stepped into the position of community outreach director. The role will see her serve more often as the public face of the foundation while also strengthening relationships with its grantees.

"The care and consideration that the foundation shows in the selection of grantees is matched by that organization's desire to include us in their milestone moments," Langley said. "It has become physically impossible for the foundation president and/or program staff to attend all of these wonderful events while continuing to perform their daily duties. I am excited to be able to focus on celebrating these incredible grantees and to serve as the ‘face' of the Foundation at these events."

Shealy's work will see her traveling all over the Palmetto State -- the foundation is the largest statewide funder in South Carolina with a diverse community of grantees.

"Yearly we grant to 150-200 organizations. Many of these organizations have been with the foundation for years and equally as many are first-time recipients of our grants," she said. "The relationship between the foundation and the grantee is an important one and we desire to make sure they all know it!"

Attendees at Essential Skills & Strategies for New Grantmakers, taking place February 6-7 in Atlanta, will hear from Langley as she leads the session titled Strategies for Professional Excellence & Personal Satisfaction. The session caps off the two-day training with an exploration into how newcomers to the field can stay motivated and focused.

"What does it take personally to keep the desire and the fire for the mission top of mind? Being a ‘social justice warrior' and a ‘gladiator for good' is tough 24/7," Langley said. "What resources can you access to better support your job growth and how can you stay well informed and continue to evolve in the practice of philanthropy?"

The session, Langley said, will focus on the individual and the many obligations that come with a career in philanthropy.

"The role of grantmaker will be complex enough," she said. "Managing the business of grantmaking and your role as funder as well as the inherent tensions that that will create among both your internal and external stakeholders will always be present."

Langley has a bachelor's degree in political science from the College of Charleston and an MBA in management information systems from Barry University in Miami.
