'Wicked Problems’ Call for Innovative Solutions: Passing Gear Philanthropy in Mississippi
Presented in partnership with MDC and the Mississippi Association of Grantmakers

Mississippi State University CAVS Extension Center
Friday, April 13, 2018 · 11:00am–2:00pm (CT)

Last year, SECF and MDC came together to publish Philanthropy as the South’s Passing Gear: Fulfilling the Promise. Released a decade after the first ‘Passing Gear’ study, this report offers an update on the state of the region, noting issues that the South needs to face and change, while also providing a framework for achieving lasting impact and highlighting recent examples of transformative philanthropy led by Southern foundations.

On Friday, April 13, grantmakers from Mississippi, the Mid-South and the Mississippi Delta have an exclusive opportunity for a deeper exploration of how Passing Gear principles can be applied specifically to the communities in the state. In partnership with the Mississippi Association of Grantmakers, SECF and MDC are offering an exclusive opportunity to explore the challenges facing The Magnolia State – and the innovative solutions grantmakers can pursue to address them.

MDC President David Dodson will lead an interactive discussion on how Mississippi foundations can apply the principles of Passing Gear philanthropy to address adaptive challenges – those problems in which our ideals are challenged by the reality of current circumstances. Participants will be invited to explore the “wicked problems” they are working on already and how the habits and practices of Passing Gear philanthropy can be deployed to advance better social outcomes in their communities.

Join us Friday, April 13, from 11:00am–2:00pm (CT) for this unique opportunity!

You can RSVP now by contacting Sandra Johnson with the Mississippi Association of Grantmakers at or (601) 321-5541.

Location: Mississippi State University CAVS Extension Center - 153 Mississippi Parkway, Canton, MS

The Southeastern Council of Foundations strives to support Members and grantmakers with access to education, resources and networking by serving as a convener and facilitator, offering a diverse range of voices and perspectives. We do not endorse colleague organization views, but rather aim to provide access to a broad range of information and resources to increase grantmaking impact and develop philanthropic leaders throughout the region.
